Prognosis for Success - Explanation of Our IVF Statistics

Following is an explanation of our IVF statistics shown above:

  • Comparison of clinic success rates: The ASRM provides the following statement about comparing clinic success rates: "A comparison of clinic success rates may not be meaningful because patient medical characteristics and treatment approaches vary from clinic to clinic." October 1999 
  • Using pregnancy rates, rather than live birth rates: Understanding a success rate is paramount to gaining an appreciation for how likely it is to have a baby. SART (Society of Assisted Reproductive Technology) published success rates are expressed as live births per cycle of treatment initiated subdivided by age. Unfortunately this methodology means that data is about two years old when it reaches the patient. We strongly believe that the most relevant data to evaluate a program is from the previous calendar year. Since live birth rate data is not yet available, pregnancy rates are expressed as ongoing but not delivered.
  • Per embryo transfer: The table above expresses our pregnancy rates for the year 2008, per embryo transfer procedure.
  • Definitions of items used in the above table:
    • ultrasound confirmed: An ultrasound confirmed pregnancy is one at six to eight weeks with a gestational sac and heartbeat seen on ultrasound imaging.
    • ongoing pregnancy: Ongoing pregnancy means that the pregnancy has progressed to at least 20 weeks (5 months) gestation.
  • Patient's age: By tradition we have broken down results by the patient's age. Egg recipient cycles are grouped together as all egg donors are under age 35.
  • Age is not the only factor influencing IVF success: It is important to remember that age alone is not the only factor influencing IVF success. Factors including ovarian reserve, baseline FSH level, prior ovarian surgery, endometriosis, multiple unsuccessful previous cycles, uterine abnormalities (such as congenital abnormalities or myomas), tubal factors (such as hydrosalpinx), and genetic factors all will influence how successful a procedure may be.

We encourage all patients to specifically address the question of their "prognosis for success" with one of our physicians. In this way, all contributory factors pertinent to the individual couple may be considered and an appropriate individual prognosis can then be defined.
